NYC -> London FT

Hi everyone. I'm a British student (born and raised in England) in my final year at university in the USA. I got terrible predicted grades (BCC) cause of covid but managed to retake business and get an A (ABC). I was able to get a full scholarship to study in the US and ended up doing IB this last summer in the US at a top bank.

Unfortunately, I did not secure a return because of a culture fit issue (might have made it clear I wanted to move back to the UK lol). In hindsight, this was poor from me but I decided I wanted to do IB in London anyways.

I grew up in a rly bad area in the UK and was on free school meals so I never really knew about university and stuff until my covid year. I'm first to attend uni and all that sob story stuff etc. (not sure if relevant but I see a lot of the applications seem to ask lmao)

Is it possible to recruit full-time for IB in London? It's my understanding that A-Level grades are important which imo is kinda stupid lmao.

I took a semester off university cause of personal/finance reasons but am still on track to graduate on time with a double major (finance and mathematics) and a good gpa (I think equivalent to a First in England?).

Is recruiting possible and is there anything I should do specifically given my background. I am concerned about the feasibility of doing in-person assessment centers due to the distance etc.

Based on the most helpful WSO content, here are some insights and advice for your situation:

Feasibility of Recruiting Full-Time for IB in London:

  1. Recruiting Timeline:

    • Full-time recruiting in London typically starts in August with offers given out around October. This timeline is consistent across various banks and firms.
  2. A-Level Grades:

    • While A-Level grades can be important, your strong university performance and relevant internship experience can help mitigate this. Banks often look at the overall profile, including university GPA, work experience, and extracurricular activities.
  3. International Experience:

    • Your experience in the US IB market can be a significant advantage. Highlighting your adaptability and the skills you gained during your internship can make you a strong candidate.

Specific Actions to Take:

  1. Networking:

    • Leverage your network from your US internship and reach out to alumni or professionals in London. Networking can often open doors that might not be accessible through traditional application processes.
  2. Application Strategy:

    • Apply to a broad range of banks, including both Bulge Bracket (BB) and Elite Boutique (EB) firms. Some banks may be more flexible with their requirements and more open to international candidates.
  3. Masters Program:

    • Consider applying for a Masters program at a top UK school (e.g., LBS, LSE, Oxbridge, Imperial, Warwick). This can enhance your profile and make recruiting easier. However, be mindful of the cost implications.
  4. Assessment Centers:

    • Given the distance, inquire if any banks offer virtual assessment centers or if they can accommodate your situation. Some firms may be flexible, especially given the current global context.

Additional Considerations:

  • Personal Story:

    • Your background and personal story can be a unique selling point. Many firms value diversity and resilience, so don't hesitate to share your journey and how it has shaped your ambitions and work ethic.
  • Preparation:

    • Utilize resources like the WSO Financial Modeling Resources, Interview Prep guides, and Mock Interviews to ensure you are well-prepared for technical and behavioral interviews.

Conclusion:

Recruiting for a full-time IB position in London is definitely possible given your background and experience. Focus on networking, applying broadly, and preparing thoroughly for interviews and assessment centers. Your unique story and international experience can be strong assets in your applications.

Good luck with your recruiting journey!
