PCA to public investing pipeline?

Does the work as an analyst at an EB PCA group get you looks at equity / credit hedge funds? Is the work modelling companies or just making decks?

For context I’m not interested in private markets (buyout or secondaries) but interned in GP Led secondaries at an EB

Based on the most helpful WSO content, working as an analyst in an EB PCA (Private Capital Advisory) group can provide some transferable skills for public investing roles, but the pipeline to equity or credit hedge funds is not as direct as it would be from traditional investment banking or equity research roles. Here's a breakdown:

  1. Skillset Relevance:

    • PCA work often involves advising on secondary transactions, GP-led deals, and fund restructurings. While this provides exposure to private market dynamics, it may not directly align with the skillset hedge funds prioritize, such as deep company modeling, public market analysis, or credit agreement analysis.
    • If your PCA role involves financial modeling of companies (e.g., for GP-led deals or fund valuations), that could be a plus. However, if the work is primarily focused on creating decks and process management, it might not be as appealing to hedge funds.
  2. Hedge Fund Preferences:

    • Credit hedge funds, in particular, value experience in credit analysis, distressed investing, and understanding complex legal scenarios (e.g., restructuring or bankruptcy). These skills are more commonly developed in leveraged finance, restructuring, or distressed IB groups.
    • Equity hedge funds typically look for candidates with strong public market modeling experience, sector expertise, and a demonstrated ability to generate investment ideas.
  3. Networking and Positioning:

    • Transitioning from PCA to public investing will likely require strong networking and positioning of your experience. Highlight any transferable skills, such as financial modeling, valuation, or exposure to investment decision-making processes.
    • You may need to supplement your experience with self-study or certifications (e.g., CFA) to demonstrate your interest and capability in public markets.
  4. Alternative Pathways:

    • If you're set on public investing, consider roles in equity research, credit research, or traditional IB groups (e.g., M&A, LevFin, or Restructuring) as a stepping stone. These roles are more aligned with the skillset hedge funds seek.

In summary, while PCA experience can provide some transferable skills, it may not be the most direct route to equity or credit hedge funds. You'll need to strategically position your experience and potentially explore other roles to strengthen your candidacy for public investing.
