I faced this exact same question 3 weeks ago and sent emails to HR of some of the banks. Most of them (in their response) said that if you want to go into IB-M&A-advisory type work then you should try to get that specific type of experience.

I am currently doing a winter IB internship and wanted to do a summer internship as well to strenghen my candidacy. And hence thought it MAY be desirable to get a summer internship in PE. My thesis was that banks would welcome PE experience.

But the feedbck is that banks value IB experience as it signals consistency and focus.

^^^true because the i'll be doing financial modeling, company analysis, due diligence, sitting in meetings, working very closely with 4 general partners..so the experience could even be a bit better than a small boutique ib internship. but i just dont know exactly if i could spin that experience into answering the why banking question.
