Perception of Finance Research

Hey Monkeys,

This summer I'm doing financially relevant academic research. I'm curious about how that might be perceived by WSO and by the street (Trying to keep my eye on the sophomore internship).

Specifically (as I can be, the paper is unpublished), I'm studying an aspect of management team behaviors and how that can affect M+A deal flow and outcomes.

Thanks for your thoughts.

Personally I think that's more interesting than doing the standard PWM internship that many people do when they are freshman or sophomores. It would help you stand out and could be a great talking point during an interview, but may not necessarily give you a ton of skills. You could also potentially get industry contacts/referrals from your professor.

Sounds like a good use of time after freshman year. I would try to use the research/paper as a networking tool. Send some e-mails/calls out to banks saying that you would like to discuss your research with professionals and hear their opinion. Are you doing research with a professor? Ask your professor if he knows any bankers that would be willing to speak/meet with you.

Having specific research to talk about while networking will be a whole lot more interesting to bankers than student x saying "I'm interested in the M&A process, would you be able to speak with me?" Instead you can say, "I researched XXX and found YYY, what has your experience been with this subject?"
