Posting TikToks? Allowed or a bad look…

Incoming FT and senior in college. Have wanted to work on my personal brand for months now given I also work on some startups. Been thinking about posting advice tiktoks on IB recruiting, career planning, etc. Would this be a mistake? Or is it ok to do?

In my opinion this would not go over well with many of my peers and especially more senior folks. I don't think it would necessarily get me fired but wouldn't be a great look. I would say use your best judgement but I personally try to be as non-present on social media as humanly possible. Obviously if you're trying to build a personal brand that can't happen. Maybe go anonymous? Not sure if others have experience with this.

As with many things in this world, you're free to do as you wish but you're not going to be free from the judgement of others.  I would guide any young person starting a new job to focus on blending in initially.  You stand out over time through your work product, your effort, attitude, personality, etc.

As seemingly common as "personal brand" building is, most people outside of your age group find it incredibly corny.  That is magnified in the buttoned up world of finance.

Terrible idea. Girl was posting a bunch of tiktoks during her summer analyst stint, got clowned on by a VP - didn't get a return offer.

I was watching a guy who recently quit IB who said they wouldn't let him post anything regarding his job even if he didn't mention the name of the bank. I think this is why a lot of the high finance "influencers" Peak Frameworks / Bryan Jun / Afzal Hussein didn't start making content until they were Ex-IB ( this also could be bc they just didn't have the time, since duh they're working in IB).
