Treat them as informationals, but be prepared to move the conversation towards the direction of a pre-MBA internship. Just feel them out. If they seem to really like you, go for it. Perhaps position it as asking them if they've heard of pre-MBA internships in banking.

It doesn't hurt to ask about pre-MBA opportunities near the end of the informational. The worst they can say is no, and you still gain an alumni contact for the future.
Thanks for your thoughts. Any thoughts on how valuable an internship at a boutique IB shop pre-MBA would be in BB IB recruiting? Theoretically I could intern in the spring and still travel in the summer or Visa versa, so mostly just wondering how marginal/meaningful the boutique experience would be viewed as?
This is a good idea! The entire point of an MBA is to get into the BBsummer internship for associates and then get the offer and come back. I can't imagine having a connection could hurt when reaching out during internship application time.
I plan to go to INSEAD where it is only 1 year and you start in december, intern in summer, finish in Fall. I bet there you start school, interview at banks week 2-3 in.
