Can someone give me some insight into what private fund advisory is and what analysts do?
What are good reasons why someone would want to do this (and why over IB)?

This is the same as private capital advisory / private funds group (Moelis just calls theirs Private Funds Advisory). There’s a lot of info on here already about what these groups do - primary fundraising, secondary advisory and now most are adding GP stake advisory. Most groups are fully integrated at this point across the three verticals with the exception of Evercore where Private Capital Advisory (secondaries) and Private Funds Group (primaries) are separate.
Moelis’ private funds advisory is predominantly secondaries advisory and bespoke capital raises. They gutted their entire primaries team last year.
