Public Finance Stepping Stone Jobs

Hi,

I interned in Public Finance last summer, but did not receive a return offer. I want to pursue PF, but acknowledge I will not be graduating working in the industry.

I am interested in stepping stone jobs to work that will assist in the transition to working in PF full time.

My ideas are:

  • Rating agency - PF group
  • Working at an MA like Baker Tilly
  • Working for a municipality/school district/issuing authority within their finance department
    • Seem to mainly be accounting roles - not sure if it's good experience

Summary: I am seeking guidance on any PF stepping stone jobs and the relative "strength" of them, thanks.

Don't mean to hijack the thread, but how come you didn't get a return offer. Are return rates low? I'm interning at one of MS/JPM/BOFA this summer and would love to get some data points, it's been hard to find folks. Good luck on the job search!

Any of those would offer a decent chance at re-recruiting into a PF position. I'd lean more towards the first two however, as you'll get experience working with a wider breadth of issuers / clients and will even have direct contact with bankers on transactions. Seem to have a good attitude (having an action plan post-disappointment of not getting a return offer) - just make sure to address any shortcomings that may have led to the decision and put your best foot forward with whichever role you end up pursuing. Best of luck and I'm sure you'll get some looks when the time comes.
