Pushing Resume Through

I recently talked to an analyst at a BB and she agreed to push my resume through. I understand having an analyst pushing my resume through isn't as valuable as a VP or MD pushing it through. But how much more likely is it that I will get selected for an interview having an anlayst do this? Or does the analyst not have enough pull?

Analysts would be the ones who have the best understanding of where you're coming from, having been in your shoes only a few years ago. Because of this, their opinion matters a lot when it comes to recruiting so the answer is very likely.

think it ultimately depends on a few different things. the analyst can ensure your resume gets a serious hard look at, but i wouldn't guarantee anything unless shes willing to quit her job (or something crazy if the firm doesnt interview you)

if the associates and vps are on the fence about you, an analysts opinion can push u to the interview pile. if this analyst likes you, but also likes someone else and everyone else likes this person too, then you're shit out of luck. or if the associates and vps think your not a good candidate, then the analysts opinion doesnt rly mean shit

I am sure this varies a lot by bank, group, and region. I know some groups/banks are a lot more formalized with recruitment than others. For instance, at my friend's group at an EB they have a VP in charge of recruitment for their group that has a lot of weight in deciding which candidates are given first round interviews. In other cases, including my own experience, analysts actually have a lot of influence when it comes to sifting through resume stacks and recommending candidates for first round interviews. In this setup there is obviously still some discussion with mid-level guys regarding recommendations, but I would say a well-respected analyst has the ability to secure a formal interview for a candidate in most cases.

Given the accelerated nature of this year's recruiting process, do you still think that a first year analyst's opinion would still hold the same weight as it did in year's prior when the recruiting process took place much later on?

If they pushed your resume to a senior or a hiring manager, in my experience you're fine to not apply directly. When/if you make it to the actual interview stage they will ask you to apply formally on the company's website. This is purely for HR purposes, so that they can say you formally applied and it doesn't look like you're getting preferential treatment. There are labor laws/requirements about posting a job for a certain amount of time to the public before "officially" selecting a candidate.

SB - thanks, they all mentioned they would push to HR, so I'm guessing that means the hiring manager. I'll make sure to apply online everywhere too.

What if you missed the deadline to apply, but you have contacts at that bank and you know that the bank doesn't start first round interviews right after the application deadline has passed?

In your case I would connect with you contacts right away and let them know about your situation so they are aware and can push your resume before they start handing out the invites.

Please be sure to have a very solid valid reason for why you missed the deadline because IB is highly lets say deadline-oriented work so if you give any b.s reason it will show weakness.

MJP338sit tight and don't make an ass of yourself

yeah, basically..

but don't wait too long. i suggest you do follow up and be assertive towards the end of the week.

in this market, they're looking to see who is the most interested and who can push for the position.

i was on the losing end of that process before I realized I needed to follow up and light a fire under their ass.

by the way, is it me or didn't u used to have a star by your name?

We're about to enter a Great Depression. Don't you want a president who's already dressed for it?

------------ I'm making it up as I go along.

I took a very similar route, except for full-time and on the banking front. I got my paperwork pushed through at a BB... I didnt hear anything from the recruiting team for about a week after my contact endorsed my application. I didnt want to bother recruiters so I emailed my contact once again and asked whether or not they had received any feedback on my application from the recruiters as I had not heard anything from recruiters yet. I heard from recruiters within the same day. I think this is the best way because 1) you're not annoying recruiters who have like a million applications in front of them and 2) your contact will probably inquire with recruiters on your behalf, which is really positive because now they're endorsing your application for a SECOND time and showing that they want to follow up and see how far you are, shows more support than just one phone call. My experience ended up being really positive with this route (I've joined this BB now for full-time)... However, in my case, I was also pretty close to the contact so asking them for help on multiple occasions was okay in my case. That's something you have to assess for yourself with your contact.
