PWP Groups

I'm an incoming Analyst at PWP currently going through the placement process. I did not intern with the firm, so I would love to get people's thoughts on the best groups. Specifically culture/quality of experience. Thank you

Based on the most helpful WSO content, here’s a breakdown of PWP's NY groups in terms of culture and quality of experience:

  1. Restructuring (RX):

    • Strengths: Strong deal flow, high-quality mandates, and the best exits at PWP, including UMM and MF PE.
    • Culture: Lean group, which means juniors get significant exposure but at the cost of work-life balance (WLB). It’s considered "sweaty" but still better than Healthcare.
    • Recommendation: Ideal if you're willing to sacrifice WLB for top-tier exits.
  2. Healthcare (HC):

    • Strengths: Excellent deal flow, particularly in devices and life sciences. However, it lacks a strong presence in biopharma compared to firms like Evercore or Lazard.
    • Culture: Known for being "insanely sweaty" with a rough culture.
    • Recommendation: Great for deal experience but challenging in terms of WLB.
  3. Consumer & Retail (C&R):

    • Strengths: Strong deal flow, especially in F&B and Beauty verticals.
    • Culture: Good culture with manageable hours compared to RX and HC.
    • Recommendation: A balanced choice for solid exits and better WLB.
  4. Industrials:

    • Strengths: Decent deal flow and exits.
    • Culture: Better WLB compared to RX and HC.
    • Recommendation: A solid option for those prioritizing culture and WLB.
  5. FinTech:

    • Strengths: Good deal flow and a strong relationship with PayPal.
    • Culture: Positive culture with solid hours, especially given current market conditions.
    • Recommendation: A good choice for those interested in FinTech with a balanced experience.
  6. FIG (Financial Institutions Group):

    • Strengths: Solid deal experience.
    • Culture: Good culture, but exits are not as strong compared to other groups.
    • Recommendation: Suitable for those prioritizing culture over exits.

Key Takeaways:

  • If exits are your top priority, RX is the strongest group, followed by HC.
  • For a better work-life balance, consider C&R, Industrials, or FinTech.
  • Culture varies significantly across groups, with RX and HC being the sweatiest, while C&R and FinTech are more manageable.

Good luck with your placement process!

Most coverage groups at PWP have weak deal flow to be very frank. HC and RX will have some big ticket deals here and there but even there it can get a little inconsistent
