Q&A - 30 years in Banking across Europe and Asia, Corporate & Consumer

Just recently "pre-retired" at 50 after 30 years working in Singapore and Poland (for the same bank!).  I have worked in or with all departments and managed Cards, Loans, Mortgages, Re-engineering, Strategy, just to name a few.  I ran customer service training programs in Africa, took on additional projects, sat on various governance forums, got certified in Six Sigma and Lean (yes, I took advantage of every opportunity!). Now I am thrilled to be able to give back with advice. So feel free to ask away!

I studied International Affairs and after graduating I started speaking to potential employers in NYC, one of them asked if I knew any other languages and after I said I knew Polish he asked if I'd move there and work for their branch there, seemed like a crazy thing to do but it was the best decision I ever made - much easier sometimes to make moves when you start at a smaller country than the US. Loved Consumer banking more than Corporate banking - quicker paced, more innovation, digital mindset...Pay and work-life balance are what you make it - negotiate, sometimes be willing to take 1 step back in order to take 2 steps forward in the near future and on work/life - look you need to set boundaries, it won't be easy but if you can show that you bring the same value and the hard work in 8hrs that someone else brings in 12 then you will be fine, but don't be afraid to showcase your work/efforts to highlight your worth! Good luck!
