One does not simply have the skills for both.
These are completely different professions with completely different skill requirements. Someone with the qualifications to be a quant is not going to be interested in what IB does.
Yeah, but a quant should be able to pick up any knowledge necessary for IB pretty quickly

I recruited for quant, IB, and tech. Had quant offers from a few funds (think Bridgewater, Citadel, Jane Street). I definitely would've made more money straight out of school in either of those two fields over banking, but I enjoy what I do and I'd say right now I'm definitely paid more than most of my friends who went into quant or trading. My situation isn't typical, but just sharing my experience.
Both of those fields have higher upside and better quality of life, but have their own problems. The career trajectory is much more uncertain and much less defined. And this is just a personal thing, but I thought that quant and tech felt too slow for me.

I've already graduated but I still get emails from the computer science dept's career office. This week's email list includes a slew of quantitative and algorithmic trading positions from BlackRock, Blackstone, Citi, DE Shaw, Goldman Sachs, JP Morgan, Morgan Stanley, Lazard, Bridgewater, Deutsche Bank, SAC Capital, State St. Capital, Jane Street, Chase Manhattan Bank, and a bunch of boutiques in philly. some are for guys with phDs but most are BS level.
friends at some of them say the total comp is same as investment banking.
in contrast, the IB and S&T recruiting list this yr has been severely cut.
anyone know why? are science/quant guys still in high demand?
