question about GS quants who come from engineering backgound

Not in financial career and have a couple noob questions.

do quants who come from Phd Engineering and work at GS progress to MD at the same rate as post-MBAs (considering their skill-set is mostly engineering so i assume their work involves doing algorithmic math to make profit for the bank, whereas MDs work would be mostly business and far removed from solo phd level math)?

do quants/MDs act as supervisors of junior members? at what level do they graduate from the cubicle/open-seating to a spacious physical office space literally on wall street?
