Question to Analysts: Social vs Professional Networking Calls

a question to all analysts,

do you prefer when people talk about things other than work during networking calls? I did a networking call for an hour and a half the other day and we were just vibing. I usually do this in the beginning of the call and jump into questions but they just wanted to chat. I even offered 30 minutes in: “hey i want to respect your time. thanks for connecting,” etc. to end the convo. But they were just vibing and we continued talking about movies.

Not sure if you want me to be super professional or super chill. I generally match the vibe of the banker i’m talking to. but i’m tryna get a referral as a college senior. Don’t have much time left and need advice.

^bump, sometimes I get the feeling that they think I’m wasting their time if I don’t cut to the chase and ask questions about their firm/job, since they’re usually at work when I call. Other times I feel like they’ve heard the same bullshit questions a billion times and would rather just shoot the shit, but it’s hard to get a read on them within the first minute of the call and decide which direction to go in
