Received BB MO/BO job offer and need some advice!

Hi everyone,

I would really appreciate your advice, as I'm trying to make tough decision.

Just some background first: - Graduated from a non-target w/ economics - ended up with a 3.3 GPA total - Tried to break into IBD SA/FT but didnt work out.. - Decided to take the F500 corporate finance route in a rotational program (not a very good one.. its ok.) - Thinking about either doing CFA or an MBA.. all depends.

Given the above, probably sounds like im still interested in IBD. I'm really not in a position to pick and choose where I end up on the street.. anywhere is great to me. I just want to work closer to the capital markets as thats where I have always had a strong interest.

With that being said, I received an offer with a BB on the buy side. I'm not really sure if its BO/MO buts its in the Finance area of the firm that focuses on providing support to the FO groups (i.e. FP&A type stuff).

I know my decision depends heavily on where I want to ultimately end up (IBD route or buy side) and i'd be open to either.. I just want to make a decision that will maximize my chances of breaking in. What would you do if you were me?

Thanks in advance!!

if you're already in f500 corp fin, there's no point in going to a BB BO/MO role - it might even be taking a step backward. i would try to network my way straight into IB from your rotational program - you might have an advantage if you aim for groups/shops that focus on the industry you've been working in.

beyond that, your best bet is probably an mba (or another job, corp dev or something, and then mba).

IBD is very difficult to break into. Your entrance route is via the graduate scheme only. And their interviews and exams are rather rigorous

If you take the BO/MO job you will be pigeon holed to this role and not even the CFA will help you move into IBD from there.

Moving from BO/MO to FO is also very difficult. My advice is... focus on getting that CFA and MBA.. will make your life a lot easier. Once you have those... you will open a lot more doors for yourself. While you take the MBA you can take an internship in an IBD area and this should help your chances of moving into that area

Good luck !
