Recent grad working in tech, how to pivot to IB?

Hey everyone,

I'm a recent grad who decided to pursue IB a bit late in the game. Unfortunately, I didn’t get in since the full-time market was shit last summer. I started working in tech last month, which is okay, but my long-term goal is still IB.

I’ve been exploring different paths to break into IB, but it seems like it's rare to make this transition. I’m also certain that I don’t want to pursue an MBA.

Does anyone have advice or recommendations on how to pivot or position myself for a future in IB? I was considering leveraging my startup experience,( working in operations and finance). However, I'm not sure if that's a going to work.

Any insights would be greatly appreciated!

Based on previous WSO threads, here are some actionable steps to help you pivot from tech to Investment Banking (IB):

  1. Leverage Your Current Role:

    • Try to get involved in any finance-related tasks within your tech role. This could include budgeting, financial planning, or any M&A activities if your company is involved in such.
  2. Networking:

    • Start networking aggressively. Reach out to alumni from your school who are in IB, attend industry events, and connect with professionals on LinkedIn. Building relationships can open doors to opportunities that might not be advertised.
  3. Boutique Banks:

    • Consider targeting boutique investment banks. They are often more flexible and open to candidates with non-traditional backgrounds. This can be a stepping stone to larger firms later on.
  4. Skill Development:

    • Take financial modeling and valuation courses to build your technical skills. This will help you stand out and show your commitment to transitioning into IB.
  5. Internal M&A or Corporate Development:

    • If your tech company has an internal M&A or corporate development team, try to transition into that role. This experience is highly relevant and can make you a more attractive candidate for IB roles.
  6. Prepare for Interviews:

    • Be ready to explain why you want to switch from tech to IB. Highlight your passion for finance, your relevant skills, and how your tech experience can bring a unique perspective to the IB role.
  7. Lateral Moves:

    • Look for lateral opportunities. Some firms might be open to hiring someone with your background for an analyst or associate role, especially if you can demonstrate strong financial acumen and a genuine interest in IB.
  8. Stay Updated:

    • Keep yourself updated on the latest M&A deals and market trends. This will help you in interviews and show that you are serious about making the switch.

By following these steps, you can position yourself better for a future in Investment Banking. Good luck!

Technically a month, but thanks. I was hoping networking might help, but wasn't sure given how competitive tech teams are.
