Recommendations - Normal?

How do I go about asking for recommendations at the end of my summer internships? and who would i ask? the person I most closely worked with (the VP) or the person with the most power, who I worked with indirectly (the SVP)?

Also, I feel like I should be getting a gift for them come the end. Is this normal?

Thanks

Probably not the best response, but at the end of my internships they offered to give me recommendations. I assume that if you did a good job this might also be the case. Do note that I did my internships at smaller shops.

Also, new employers will often call your previous supervisors, so I don't know that whether a person is willing to give you a recommendation or not really matters. Good luck.
