Renege etiquette

How do I renege in the best manner possible? Recently received another offer for FT which I applied to during summer internship as a backup plan. This offer is actually better in terms of compensation but more importantly also for my personal/family situation.

Do I just email HR letting them know or should I let the Resource Manager/staffer know as well as a courtesy to explain the situation?

Always call, then follow up with email.

“Thank you for taking the time to interview me, unfortunately I will no longer be able to join you as a xx”

Thank you and the team for spending your time in my application and xxx etc

Explicitly mention “ I am rescinding my offer to join xxx effective immediately”

I wish you and the team at xx the best of luck

Well said, I completely agree.

Also, if they ask you where you are going, just say you’re not comfortable sharing that information at the moment. They won’t ask you again..
