Rothschild London. Great place, you've already signed with the firm, and you had a great connection with the people.
Also...
Exp in London ---> Transition to other countries, including Mumbai (easier)
Exp in Mumbai ---> Transition to other countries, outside Mumbai (much harder - even if your name and exp is great)
Your long-term aim is India, but being at Rothschild London won't hurt your chances (and I assume you have family ties to India too), and this way, if you change your mind or you're interested in exp in other countries before going back to India, you'll have the option.
Also... Lazard has a real hard culture - I imagine analysts in India in general get worked to the bone, so I wonder how much harder it is at Lazard...
Both strong offers my man, congrats. Don't get caught up in the name game - choose what will open the door to where you really want to after your stint. Don't expect Rothschild to treat you any better than Lazard - remember, your'e an analyst. Your next 2 years belongs to the bank - so choose wisely. Best of Luck brother
"Jesus, he's like a gremlin; comes with instructions and shit"
Can you please comment on your banking experience in india. In terms of the culture/hours. I hear that clients are not as sophisticated in India and therefore you do not learn as much ?
was there a significant amount of modelling ? Also india is very hierarchical, did your superiors treat you well ?
also can you comment on the other analysts ? Is it all connections ? are most banking analysts educated in the states/uk etc
thanks !
btw i strongly suggest you accept london. You can move to india easily later. your base will be stronger.
A Fellow LinguistIf we're talking about NYC, unless you really love the people at Rothschild, you should go with Lazard by far. Better M&A, better restructuring.
yeah, but the problem with lazard is that its a generalist offer at first. of course m&a or restructuring would be great, but my fear is i wont get either. Im from a west coast non target and have no alumni connections, so networking into the groups seems difficult
^ The capital markets groups are not actually in Lazard Capital Markets, but yeah as a generalist you should be placed into one of the industry M&A groups or the restructuring group. Did you interview with M&A/RX people? If so, I'm pretty sure you will end up as a generalist within M&A/RX, not the firm as a whole.
Only in London (and some other European cities) would you potentially want to choose Rothschild over Lazard. But in the US, especially in NY, you go with Lazard.
Deeeefinetly Lazard, faaar superior exit ops and Rothschild is good and all but it's more like royalty that's kinda cool so if you're a prestige whore fine but even then i'd go Lazard

I will be starting FT at a decent MM in london this summer.
I would like to know from any current Lazard/Rothschild people what the steps are to lateral as a 1st or 2nd year analyst. Could anyone shed some light on how to put myself in the best position possible to do this?
(Other info: I went to a UK target school think Ox/Cam/lse and i speak several european languages)

Rothschild London is probably one of the top places you can be in the UK.
What James07 said. Being from Mumbai, I absolutely love that city but I wouldn't give up rothschild for it
Rothschild is like no.2 in M&A in UK. Mumbai is a shithole. No choice here.
...
No brainer here, pick Rothschild.
rothschild london is a no brainer.....

Lazard NY>>>>Rothschild NY, why is this even a question? I wouldn't consider Rothschild in US an elite boutique unless your talking about the RX group
(but just to keep things in perspective, both are top notch firms)
