SA Buddy and Mentor

Fellow Monkeys,

How are buddies and mentors determined for SAs? Does HR just randomly pick? Does asking a banker to be my buddy/mentor while networking before the summer seem too desperate or inappropriate?

Thanks for any help.

I wouldn't flat out ask them that can be awkward. just casually invite them for coffee or lunch once you hit the desk - then you'll have two mentors, one assigned and one from networking

Thanks for the reply.

I asked this because I had an interviewer who I built some rapport with and I was thinking about setting up call before the summer to network a bit (not planing to meet her in person anytime soon given the coronavirus). I was considering bringing up the mentor thing should the call go well. I have no idea how mentor is decided and whether this can be awkward tho.

My SA is generalist and the above-mentioned interviewer is in my most interested group. That’s why I wish to network beforehand.
