Schools and Internships (Currently in Community College)

So at the present time, I am currently in community college nearing the end (one more semester to go until I have an associates) I; however, plan to transfer before then. I currently have a 4.0 and live in Northern New Jersey so I was considering NYU, Rutgers, Baruch, and Cornell. I believe NYU and Cornell have pretty good transfer odds.

I really would like to get some sort of internship, preferably something in banking or Asset Management. I don't have any extracurriculars I really do not have much time.

I go to school full time, work full time, run an online e-commerce business, and trade during school and work. I was thinking this could be something to make up for the fact I don't do much in way of extracurriculars and the fact I am at a CC. My stock portfolio is up 700% and 110% since the new year so that gives me something to talk about I am sure. I am also an URM.

I just am not so sure where to get started with networking or where to actually find the time that is another issue.

Well, the process of securing an internship is an arduous one (at least it was for me). What I think is the best route to follow is to create a list of financial companies near where you live/ go to school and hand deliver your resume to the branch manager. In addition, ask if they have time to set up a meeting to discuss any internship opportunities that may be available. You can always call or email the company, (or just apply to internship programs online), but I feel as if that is a more impersonal way to apply and that you become another name in a stack of names. If you want to stand out as an applicant, try the in person approach and don't let rejection deter your from your goals.

Hope this helps and good luck!

I live in a building with a VP at JPM and I have talked to him before but I haven't brought up internship opportunities (this was when I was first starting school so I didn't think to ask).

From community college do people accept many internships? That's my only concern, I was considering to apply once I transfer.

I think that if you were to take the regular online application approach, then applying with a Cornell or NYU affiliation would be leaps and bounds better than applying from a CC. But, I think you should reconnect with that guy in your building and tell him your current situation and future goals. That seems like a really great chance for you to secure an internship.
