Scottish 3rd year undergrad Geography Student looking to break into IB in London

Hello!

Anyone have any advice for a Scottish 3rd year undergrad Geography Student looking to break into IB in London? I've managed to secure one internship for a short period in VC in Edinburgh and I'm doing lots of online courses e.g. Yale and Gies, and looking to generally break in any way I can. I would prefer not to do a masters and come up through a Graduate scheme in September 2026. Do you think I would be able to cold email my way into unpaid experience at a small P/E firm or similar institution?

Thanks for your time!

Breaking into investment banking (IB) in London as a Scottish 3rd-year Geography student is definitely possible, but it will require a strategic approach. Based on the most helpful WSO content, here’s what you should focus on:

1. Leverage Your VC Internship

  • Highlight your VC internship in Edinburgh as a key experience. Even if it’s short, emphasize the skills you gained (e.g., financial analysis, market research, or deal sourcing). This will show recruiters that you have relevant exposure to the finance world.

2. Cold Emailing for Unpaid Experience

  • Cold emailing can be effective, especially for smaller Private Equity (PE) firms or boutique investment banks. Many WSO users have successfully secured internships this way.
  • Tips for Cold Emailing:
    • Target smaller firms or boutiques, as they are more likely to consider unpaid interns.
    • Personalize your emails. Mention something specific about the firm or the recipient’s background.
    • Keep it concise. Introduce yourself, explain your interest, and attach your CV.
    • Example template:
Dear [Recipient's Name], My name is [Your Name], and I am a 3rd-year Geography student at [Your University]. I recently completed an internship in Venture Capital in Edinburgh, where I [insert key achievement]. I am passionate about breaking into investment banking and would love the opportunity to contribute to [Firm Name]. I am particularly interested in [specific area of their work], and I would be happy to assist on an unpaid basis to gain further experience. Please find my CV attached, and I would be delighted to discuss this further at your convenience. Kind regards, [Your Name]

3. Networking

  • Networking is less emphasized in the UK compared to the US, but it’s still valuable. Use LinkedIn to connect with alumni from your university or professionals in the industry. Aim for informal chats over coffee or virtual calls to learn about their career paths and seek advice.
  • Focus on building genuine relationships rather than directly asking for opportunities.

4. Online Courses and Skill Development

  • Your efforts with Yale and Gies online courses are great. Make sure to also develop technical skills like financial modeling, Excel, and PowerPoint. Consider WSO’s financial modeling courses to strengthen your technical foundation.

5. Alternative Routes

  • If you prefer not to do a master’s, focus on securing internships or off-cycle opportunities. Many firms in London offer off-cycle internships, which can lead to full-time roles.
  • Explore Spring Weeks or other structured programs if you’re eligible. These can be a stepping stone to summer internships.

6. Timing and Persistence

  • Timing is crucial. Many smaller firms don’t finalize their headcount until closer to the summer, so keep applying and following up.
  • Be persistent but professional in your outreach. If you don’t get a response, follow up after a week or two.

By combining cold emailing, networking, and skill-building, you can position yourself as a strong candidate for IB roles in London. Good luck!
