Seeking Career Advice After a Tough Exit from Investment Banking
Hi everyone,
I’m seeking advice on navigating the job market after a challenging experience. Earlier this year, I was let go from my role at an investment bank after 1.5 years. My performance reviews had always been solid—until I received a surprising negative review just 45 days before being terminated. I consistently went above and beyond in my role, to the point of burning out.
As the only woman of color on my team, I faced relentless bullying from my VP and MD, which created a hostile environment. To make matters more difficult, I’ve recently been diagnosed with cancer at the age of 28.
Now, I’m grappling with the impact of a negative remark ("Discharged: Mismatch between business needs and skillset") on my Form U5 and wondering if this will be a permanent roadblock in my career. I left on bad terms due to the toxic culture, and I’m concerned about how this will affect my chances of returning to investment banking or a similar field.
Is my career in investment banking over? Do I have any chance of overcoming this setback? Any guidance on how to approach this situation, rebuild my career, or pivot to related opportunities would be deeply appreciated.
Thank you in advance for your support and insights.
Can't comment on your work conditions or your performance but a word on management as a third-party.
If I were your boss I would have your U-5 amended because the timing of your cancer diagnosis just places them in an inconvenient spot.
The messier the termination the worse it is for everyone.
If you were to ask for arbitration I wonder how it would play out.
