Going to a BB bank next year for IBD and I am currently thinking about how my GPA at UMICH/UVA/USC will fair for PE recruiting.
As of now, I think I can graduate with a 3.8 as a finance major. However, I have room in my schedule to get a second major in accounting. I believe this second major could potentially drop my GPA to a 3.7. Do you think its worth it?

recruiting wise, i dont see the point in second major, unless: -it is something cool/respectful (eg. maths/phyiscs/CS/law related) -your first major is not finance/business/econ related
however, 0.1 drop in GPA is worth it imo i dont think that it would make any difference whatsoever
Just curious - what's the motivation behind adding an accounting major?

Personally, I have always felt when people look at applicants they throw them in buckets: 3.50-3.75 and 3.75-400
You already have an offer, so that job is going to be monumentally more important than having a second major. If you really are interested in it, do it, but your time would probably be better used networking at PE firms or doing something interesting to talk about in interviews.

Like I said, do something interesting to make you stand out. Do some research, start a club, climb a mountain, volunteer somewhere interesting, get leadership experience, network more, etc. A second major in college won't change a lot for you, because you already have an offer lined up. Plus, the 3.8 will probably place better (extremely marginally) if you ever go to B-School.

Just my opinion, but an accounting second major wouldn't add anything for me personally after a finance undergrad and IB experience (IB experience alone is what I care more about honestly). You might as well have the reason your GPA fell be that you relaxed and partied a little too much before you enter the shitshow.
