Speech Impediment in IB
Incoming Investment Banking intern ignore title. I've had a mild/moderate stutter for the better part of my life. It's improved a lot over the past couple years but I still stutter when I'm nervous around people (networking calls too). I can mitigate most of it when I speak 50-70% of my normal speed, but I'm worried that my colleagues/seniors will think I'm slow. Any advice?
Based on the most helpful WSO content, here’s some advice for managing a stutter in investment banking:
Own It with Confidence: Many professionals with stutters have found success by addressing it upfront. For example, during networking calls or introductions, you could say something like, “Just a heads-up, I have a stutter, so if I pause or repeat myself, it’s not the connection.” This can help set expectations and reduce any potential misunderstandings.
Slow Down and Breathe: Slowing your speech, as you’ve already identified, is a great strategy. It’s better to speak clearly and deliberately than to rush and risk losing clarity. Your colleagues are more likely to respect your thoughtfulness than judge your pace.
Focus on Your Strengths: As a junior in IB, much of your work will revolve around technical skills and deliverables rather than constant verbal communication. Let the quality of your work and your knowledge of the concepts shine. Your work ethic and expertise will define you far more than your speech.
Practice and Preparation: For networking calls or presentations, practice in advance. Speech therapy or public speaking classes can also help you build confidence and refine your communication skills. Techniques like enunciating words slowly and thinking through your sentences before speaking can make a big difference.
Leverage Written Communication: In situations where verbal communication feels challenging, use emails or written reports to convey your ideas. This can help you articulate your thoughts clearly without the pressure of speaking in real-time.
Remember You’re Not Alone: Many successful professionals, including Jack Welch and Jes Staley, have had stutters. Their achievements prove that a speech impediment doesn’t define your potential.
Mindset Matters: Half of the battle with stuttering is overcoming the fear of stuttering itself. Embrace it as part of who you are, and don’t let it discourage you. Confidence in your abilities will resonate more than any speech disfluency.
You’re stronger than your stutter, and tackling it head-on will only make you more resilient. Good luck with your internship!
