Is it common to be in a spot where much of your post-tax income goes towards going out, living expenses, etc as an IB analyst in NYC. I find that my savings have remained stagnant.

Bonuses in financial services are pretty dependable. The “variables” are 1) getting fired and 2) total economic collapse.
