Summer Accommodation for IBD SA in London

When is the earliest time to expect to find something for summer (10 week let) on gumtree/spareroom/etc?
I've searched through a lot of previous threads, but was wondering if there was any new advice on where is best for a Canary Wharf job. Will my summer be made more enjoyable by sharing/letting rather than going to university halls?

Feel free to PM me.

Doesn't your bank offer corporate housing?

If you are looking for university housing, I remember that a lot of interns stay in the Nido at Spitalfields, which may look expensive, but is really convenient and offers pretty decent accommodations.

I'm talking about liquid. Rich enough to have your own jet. Rich enough not to waste time. Fifty, a hundred million dollars, buddy. A player. Or nothing. See my Blog & AMA

Unforunately not - all I've been given is a list of resources. I didn't know any banks offered accommodation!

Nido Spitalfields doesn't seem to have any summer availability, but thanks for the tip.

Google around a bit, I remember that someone posted a list for Summer Analysts 2013 where each one was staying for the duration of the internship. You will probably find a lot of good spots on that list. It was somewhere on Google Docs I believe.

This may or may not be helpful since I was lucky that I have a lot of friends in London but when I did my SA in London I stayed with a friend who had been living there for a couple of years. It was great to have someone who knew the city who could tell me where I could get a beer for less than £5 and to show me the ropes with the underground etc. (Londoners hate noobs on the underground).

Obviously it depends on your flatmate but I would recommend sharing with someone if you can.

thing about gumtree is that it's kind of a last minute thing (show up in June, 2 days before you start work and grab a place)- is this a normal thing to do, or is it advisable to try to book something further in advance?

true, its mostly very quick but there are also some that start earlier.

also check zoopla it kinda consolidates all search engines for housing. since it will be difficult to arrange something without viewing you need to get over there at some point (a month in advance or just 2 days in advance)

Get a place in halls (LSE, UCL, etc...). They're really cheap and great place to meet other interns from all over the country.

Unfortunately "affordable" housing in London does not exist. London is considerably more expensive for housing that NYC.

Look for housing north of the Thames anywhere west or north-west of "the City". Though Chelsea, Soho and Kensington are uber-expensive (and I'm presuming out of your price range), you might be able to find a decent place in Hammersmith or west of Notting Hill for 200 GPB pw (per week). Depends on how much you're willing to slum it.

You can take the tube to Canary Wharf from just about anywhere, it's just a disgusting experience during rush hour.

gumtree and craigslist.

Try to work through your fellow Summer Class. The bank should give you all of the email addresses.

A lot of them attend LSE or will have connections in London. They may know of someone going away for the summer looking to sublet. Or they might need a roommate themselves.

Even if the person is not in London now, at least you can group up and get a better place.

I know a lot of people (myself included) who found their stuff this way for their internships.

Baker St. is not a bad area for the summer. There is a fair amount of housing that is used by students (LBS is close by) and it's on the Jubilee Line, so no changes to Canary Wharf. I wouldn't live there full-time, but it's fine for the summer.

This is a mad old post but I thought I would just add my 2 cents for future canary wharfers- There are plenty of cheap housing on isle of dog. I lived a 2 minute walk from Crossharbour DLR or a 20 min walk from central canary wharf and I was paying like 350 GBP/month. With that said though I lived with 3 other random people in a council house but fuck it you won't even be home that much.

Hey, lots of interns live together over here - cheap and loads of fun. I am actually looking for more people to share with over the summer, pm me for details! Renting alone is pretty insane, unless you wanna be stuck in shitty uni halls all summer or blow all your salary on a good flat, of which you are going to see the bed, the bathroom and the front door.

"Every man should lose a battle in his youth, so he does not lose a war when he is old"

AsatarFor reference, I paid just over £400p/w for a very nice studio. Riverside, views over the O2, walking distance of Canary Wharf, joke of a price though.

lol wut? for 400 quid per week you should be getting an absolutely sick place, also surely thats more than half your salary?

To the OP, your best bet is as said uni halls, or gumtree, however you do need to get sort of lucky in that sense. The absolute best thing is if you know anyonw at uni in london who is out for the summer and has a flat they can leet you stay in.

Hello! I'm looking to rent out my place over the summer and it is located in central london. Drop me a message with your contact details if you are interested, thanks! :)

Hey everybody,

do you have tips for finding an accommodation in London (Tower Hamlets / Canary Wharf / E14) for 10-12 weeks? Maybe you have some contacts or homepages you can recommend.

Do you have any learnings you could share here? :)

Absolute best bet is to find students at uni who are renting and are gone over the summer. The price is always good because you are actually doing them a service.

And it worked exactly like that

Anything in the city, go Claredale. It's built like a prison but it's full of interns in the summer so you can always have dick measuring contests in the laundry room.

Its social and the rooms will do.

Oh shit, is it really that bad? I am living there this summer :D

Depends what division. If you're in S&T, find some social people. You'll go out with them a lot. For IBD, you're just sleeping so it suffices. It's convenient and cheap.
