Summer Analyst: IB vs. IB Risk
Evaluating 2 internship offers currently with IB team in Menlo Park and IB Risk in NYC. I want to take the IB role because the role seems to be better for the long haul and they seemed like good guys, but my research on this specific office and the firm has been pretty negative on this site. Additionally, I've read that risk in this firm isn't perceived so negatively like other risk roles and the feasibility of lateraling in house to IB. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

Thanks for the advice man, I appreciate it!
Lateralling from another place that does IB is always going to be easier than doing it from somewhere that does something completely different. Hell, you'd probably have a better shot going from a boutique IB to JPM IBD than you would trying to make the same move from JPM Risk.

@trees2017" I'm sure you made your decision already, but in case not, thought I'd offer another perspective.
IB Risk at JPM is actually a great program. I personally started off there, and it's been a great springboard for my career in the bank. Am now in leveraged finance, and have gotten the opportunity to go abroad as well.
Dealflow is great, as you're at JPM, which is the #1 debt house on the street by nearly every measure I've seen--and clients expect their banks to step up with their balance sheet to do these deals. Technical skill development is also top notch, especially within corporates and special credits, where you need to do LBO and cash flow models.
As for exit ops, the guy who replaced me when I left my first role in IB Risk has himself moved into a coverage role, and I know of 7 others just off the top of my head who moved into coverage, another 8 who moved into leveraged finance, and 4 more who moved into other front office roles--all at JPM. Of those who left IB Risk, I know 2 who moved to corp dev/strat and another 6 who moved directly to buyside PE or debt funds.
Might be too late for you already, but highly recommend the role to others.
