Switch to IB
Hi everyone,
I’m currently working as a Consultant at Deloitte (~1.5 years experience) and had a prior internship at an MBB firm. I’ll be joining LBS MFA this August. I’m looking to pivot from consulting into investment banking (ideally in London), and I’m trying to use the next ~3–4 months effectively before the program starts.
Given my background is more strategy/consulting-focused, I’m aware that I need to strengthen my fundamentals and positioning for IB recruiting, which I understand starts quite early into the programme.
Wanted to get some advice on:
What courses would you recommend, and how deep should I go?
Is it worth trying for a short-term boutique IB / advisory internship before August?
Should I try for CFA L2 August 2026?
Would really appreciate any advice from folks who have made a similar transition, thank you in advance!
To make the most of your transition from consulting to investment banking (IB) and prepare effectively for recruiting at LBS, here’s a breakdown of actionable advice based on the most helpful WSO content:
1. Courses to Strengthen Fundamentals
Venture Capital Bootcamp: If you’re interested in advisory roles, this course covers cap table modeling and term sheets, which can be useful.
Aim to complete at least one technical course (like the Modeling & Valuation Bootcamp) before August to build confidence in your financial modeling skills.
2. Short-Term Boutique IB/Advisory Internship
3. CFA Level 2 in August 2026
4. Additional Tips for Positioning
By focusing on technical courses, securing a boutique internship, and networking strategically, you’ll position yourself strongly for IB recruiting. Good luck with your transition!
