Switching intern divisions within a company for next summer

Hi,

I am looking to switch from a department in a bank to IB next summer, and I was wondering about the process for it. Specifically, I was wondering if I should fill out the regular application for it now. I have the 2024 internship with this bank, but I want to apply IB next summer. Should I fill the application, or will this risk my chance of a return offer? Please let me know your insights, thanks in advance!

Based on the most helpful WSO content, here's a breakdown of your situation and some insights:

  1. Application Process:

    • If you're aiming to switch divisions for the next summer, you should look out for internal mobility programs within your bank. Many banks have formal processes for interns to express interest in other divisions.
  2. Risk to Return Offer:

    • According to a thread from a user at JP Morgan, applying to a different line of business (LOB) should not impact your chances of getting a return offer at your current desk. It's mentioned that your sponsor would be the only one in your group to know that you're applying elsewhere.
  3. Communication:

    • It's crucial to communicate your interest in switching divisions. However, do this discreetly and professionally. As per the advice given in the WSO threads, don't broadcast your intentions to switch to everyone, but rather have a conversation with your HR and possibly your desk head if required by the internal policy.
  4. Timing:

    • You should be aware of any deadlines for such internal applications. For instance, in one of the threads, there was a deadline of July 12th for expressing interest in switching divisions.
  5. Performance:

    • Focus on performing exceptionally well in your current role. A strong performance can bolster your case for a switch and might make it easier to secure a position in IB next summer.
  6. Networking:

    • Engage in networking within the bank, especially with the IB division. This can help you learn more about the internal transfer process and make valuable connections that could assist in your transition.

Remember, each bank's policy might differ slightly, so it's essential to gather all relevant information specific to your bank. Good luck with your internal application!
