Switching Offices from SA to FT

Interning at an EB in a very good group but not in the NY office. I want to switch offices for FT and am planning on having that conversation with some people in my group that I am close with, but wanted to hear any advice or thoughts.

Safe approach- get the return then ask. They aren’t going to retract it just for asking, and there’s a chance they say yes.

Risky- ask before returns go out. There’s a chance they’ll consider you for a seat in NY (ie taking the spot of a current intern there if you’re deemed a better option). This risks your shot at a return in your current office if they’re worried you wouldn’t accept it/don’t want to be there
