Currently a rising junior, will be interning at a firm that is related to finance but not related to investment banking or anything front office related. If recruiters ask why I did this instead of banking, can I just say because I had no other options?

No but often times interviewers will ask you why didn't you do investment banking summer even though it's obviously because I couldn't get any. So should I just tell the truth or give them some BS like oh i wanted to try out new things
They will know. Put some not too stinky BS on it and call it a day.
I honestly can't imagine them asking that. The most obvious reason you can state as to why you didn't do banking your sophomore summer is because everywhere you applied to was only looking for juniors.
You don't have to tell them. They'll be able to smell the stench on you :/
