The reality of moving internally from AM to IBD

Hi everyone,

I have recently started a FT FO role at a BB, which I don't like, and I would really want to get into a non-M&A role (not trying to be specific) in IBD in the following 12-18 months.

Having talked to people inside my firm, they all have mixed opinions on how doable it is to pull a direct move from my position to the desired role in IBD, as they all believe it is possible but most think it will be very difficult for it to happen.

Thus, I was wondering if you guys could share some insights into any similar moves you have seen happen in your firm and share your opinion on how realistic my plans are, as I am sceptical about the internal mobility promoted by HR.

Would it be better to apply for this position elsewhere?

Thanks,

P.S: There are no direct transferable skills fro my current role to the IBD role I am seeking.

Don't want to be specific but it is a client facing support role. Most of my work is dealing with the client and internal teams to basically make what the client wants happen asap.

It is very admin heavy (90% admin), so we don't really learn technical transferable skills (almost no excel or ppt)

Thus, I would like to move to a position where I do get those skills, not limiting myself to do this kind of role forever, and eventually move to private credit or an investment team, if the PE move is not possible (which I would probably have to do by moving first to a product specialist team and then to an investing team within my firm).

This is not true "AM" as the forum views it, hence why people you talk to say it's impossible. sounds like more ops/client support/back office than true asset management, even if you are covering AM. I would a;so say impossible to move to IB from this type of role - even internally, you're expected to have a very high level of Excel and modeling knowledge otherwise you will be truly lost in the sauce for at least a year, likely more

I would try to move to a better role, internally or externally - won't be IB but an AM investment team perhaps or a product team

Just stay in AM mate. IBD isn’t worth it. You’re already working in the exit opp.

Straight up lmaoo just stay in AM you will regret coming to banking
