Thoughts on entering Buy Side through Insurance firm?

What are your thoughts on entering the buy-side through the investment management side of an insurance firm? Many have rotational programs that put you on different desks (credit, real estate, equity, etc.) that can give you a broad exposure. What can be the exit opps for an investment analyst in a position like that? Sales and Trading / Equity Research at a bank a possibility after a year or two? Hedgefunds? Also, for those in an investment analyst role, what is the typical career progession / comp? Do most become PMs? Thanks.
