I'll be doing a summer rotation at a BB this summer. Out of all the desks (throwing market conditions aside), mortgages are the most interesting to me.
They say they'll still hire younger people but is it still a huge risk to take with my summer? (aka will this market ever get back to where it was or is the MBS CDO no longer going to exist the way we knew it before)?

trading mortgages is alot different from trading CDOs. Mortgages are a very liquid product and they never stopped trading during the crisis. Trading mortgage debt isnt going anywhere.
