Time to throw in the towel?

Analyst in a top group at a top bank and just MISERABLE. I am so much worse than everyone in my team and have also lost the motivation I once used to have to work hard and learn. Got into IB just to prove to myself I could and genuinely feel sick every morning going into work and live in fear of my phone buzzing and what new task is going to ruin my weekend. Have done over a year but not sure if I should complete another year or not…have absolutely zero interest in buyside btw.

I want to do a reasonably chill job in finance such as IR or something completely different like tech sales…but feels wrong to quit after all the effort I’ve put to get into IB in the first place. I am fortunate to be in a position where I am not concerned about money in the short term and don’t care about clearing 7 figures in the long term.

Should I try to move to a more relaxed team within my bank (as I’m not at all concerned about exits) just to have a bit more credibility on my CV with more years of IB experience or just give up now (am making good progress with some processes) and take the first offer I get and RUN.

Genuinely has sucked all the happiness out of my otherwise pretty good life…but not sure if being in a bad group has tainted my vision of the entire industry.

Sorry to hear about your current situation but this is not the end of the world. You have gained valuable experience AND have a better idea of what you like/dislike professionally.

Your post sounds like you really want to exit but may feel like a failure/embarrassed. If you do want to stay in the industry, you have to find ways to improve your weaknesses – moving groups/banks won't magically fix these.

Leaving the industry is not the end of the world and doesn't mean you're a failure. People choose different paths all the time and it's nbd.

I would challenge you to focus on finding ways to improve and turn your experience into a positive one. Find a mentor or someone in the industry you can talk to as well!

Thank you for your kind response :) yes you’re right, I do think there’s that thought that I’ve failed that’s holding me back.

I was hoping to move to a less technical team (like ECM or something) with better hours to see if I can do another year, I’m not sure why I’m so hung up on doing two years when I know I don’t want to do buyside.

Agree with you there. If you’re not as excel savvy as technical team is like a living hell. Avoid Real Estate, P&U and Metals and Mining. Focus on ECM, DCM, or Sponsors you may like it more. Sounds like you’re feeling bad because you’re struggling to pick up the tasks as quick as your team, or you feel behind from your peers. This is normal when you’re early in the company, but it’s up to you to decide if you want to continue.

What coverage group are you in btw it would be helpful to know?
