Transaction Banking to IBD?

Hey Everyone,

I'm a rising sophomore who attends a semi-target school and is interested in Investment Banking. I hope to gain an SA internship at a BB, but this recruitment cycle I was only accepted into GS's Transaction Banking division as an Operations Analyst. I was wondering what the exit ops for this division would be or if I could utilize this experience to work in IB the summer after my junior year. GS is a prestigious bank, and I know having an internship from there would be good for my resume, but I'm unsure if the actual work I will do will help me break into IB. I'm also unsure if turning down the internship will negatively affect me in the next recruitment cycle. The internship is also in Dallas, and I'm unsure about working there. I will have to officially accept or reject my offer soon, so I'm trying to decide if I should apply to other IB internships and just reject the GS offer.

Hello,

Yes, this would be for my sophomore summer. I'd like to recruit for IBD SA 2024, and I was wondering if I should complete this internship and get the name brand on my resume or if I should apply and potentially work at a boutique firm instead. GS usually offers analysts a job the summer after they complete their internship, but I[d likely turn in hopes of an IBD job after graduation. Thanks!

We are in the same boat. I was also recruited for transaction banking. I think our best bet would be to lateral (not sure if this word is applicable here) or advance to Corporate Banking. Then leverage that experience to break into the traditional IBD.

Transaction Banking is not High Finance but it is just one level below it in terms of prestige
