un- and relevering the comparables beta

Is the process of unlevering and subsequently relevering the comparables beta really only useful when you apply a target D/E that differs from the comparables mean or median? So far I've read that, in case the target's current D/E differs from the mean/median D/E of it's peers, you take their mean/median D/E as your new target capital structure. But by doing so, the whole process seems superfluous, as the result will be the comparables mean levered beta, which you can already observe without un- and relevering.
