Unpaid Internships CPT.

My question is addressed to any international students on this forum and if they have any experience or know anyone who did an unpaid internship on the F-1 visa. So basically I did an unpaid internship this past Summer for which I did not obtain CPT, since my understanding was that unpaid work does not need work authorization. Reading online it seems like unpaid internships that can be categorized as "having educational benefit for the intern" do not require authorization. I am a little concerned since I now have to go through a background check for an EB and was wondering if that might land me with any issues. Would really appreciate any insight.
