Updated thoughts on LionTree

Given some recent high profile deals (Verizon Media / Apollo, Warner Media / Discovery, MGM / Amazon) is the firm on the rise as a major player / true EB?

Feel like they were always respected but not viewed in the same light as an Evercore, Moelis, Centerview type EB by most on the forum. Assuming they can keep this pace up feels like analysts must be getting a pretty solid overall experience and likely some solid exits. Would it be worth trying to lateral if at a MM or lower BB?

Hey, since this topic is pretty quiet for now maybe I can chime in to see if I can help. I recognize that LT may not be super respected on this forum but I think among people at EVR/MC/LAZ etc it already is and has been a well-respected firm on par with GS/MS etc albeit in the sense that they focus on media and have been a top firm in that space I understand since Aryeh left UBS I think to start it. I’m not sure if the firm has any plans to branch out of its expertise in media towards becoming a full platform/full service bank like the evercore’s of the world or if it just wants to stay in its space of expertise and keep doing a great job for clients and the industry. Given that, I would think that if you want to work in media or have a media focus in finance like being a media banker or go onto to be a media investor (at least for a certain amount of time) it may make sense to try to join that firm. I hope this helps

This is pretty much correct. You can get great looks at TMT HF, etc working at LionTree and although you get worked pretty hard, culture has improved over the years (source analyst who just left).

I’m curious strategically if it even makes sense to expand or merge with another bank (CVP is the best fit to me). Arey has plenty of money and probably wants to keep the whale-hunting up as thats where he’s going to get his notoriety and outsized comp. Significantly expanding LionTree doesn’t really fit imo. They have a growth arm which does fine and they have offices in SF, etc that cover other subsectors such as gaming (and worked on the EBAY divestiture). Maybe they could poach another top TMT guy at a BB but right now I don’t see expansion as truly necessary—the top guys would rather just get paid

Maybe. I think they were just announced as the lead advisors on the discovery deal. I would think they should just keep doing what they are doing. No need to sell or merge or anything like that in my opinion. Maybe Blair will show up and try to hire Aryeh away from LT haha

Anyone know where they recruit from for UG or MBA and where laterals have come from? Would also be interested in comp numbers?
