Using alumni connections advice...Should I?

Hello all,

I am freshman at a non-target in the Midwest and I have secured a internship at a VC in SF this summer, also I am in our undergraduate finance association, and in Student consulting for non-profits program where they picked 14 out of 80 students to do pro-bono consulting (my first project is to help a NPO with making a pitchbook because they want to merger with another NPO, its interesting stuff).

Through luck/networking I have 3 meetings with 3 analyst/associates in NYC (that work at Goldman, we actually are a semi-target for GS 2-3 peps a year go there from our school). I am interested in joining the Goldman Spring divisional internship my sophomore year, and was planning on asking these guys if they could help me achieve it, but one of my friends who actually is in IBD told me not to use my alumni contacts now because if I dont secure the sophomore internship, these alumni contacts won't be willing to help me come my junior year.

He also told me that the sophomore spring internships sophomore year do feed into the IBD rotational program at GS, so if I can break in somehow then I would be set. But he said that GS doesn't exactly do recruiting for those internships anywhere else other than HYPS ( I am thinking he was bending the truth a bit here). Is this true? If not then should I go ahead and speak with these alumni contacts come winter quarter? How should I approach them?

Thanks again, sorry for the long post.

at my school they are kind of all in the same loop, since there is prob not more than 9-10 total people that have gone to Goldman from my school. So they all use each other pretty nicely, also the MD at the VC I am interning at has worked at GS so I was also going to ask him, but since he has been out for 8 years or so I am guessing he doesn't have much of a network there.

your a freshman! I would just relax and enjoy school, worry about finding a job 2nd semester of next year at the very earliest. Get good grades.
