UVA McIntire

Hi, I am an incoming First Year (international student) at UVA, intending to major in political science, but I am also very interested in studying Commerce at McIntire. Additionally, I aspire to break into Investment Banking, and I heard that joining finance clubs at UVA can help me achieve such a goal. I was wondering if you guys could give me tips or guidelines on what clubs I can join or what courses I can take to maximize my chances of getting into McIntire, and later down the line, break into IB from UVA.

To maximize your chances of getting into McIntire and breaking into Investment Banking (IB) from UVA, here’s what you need to know based on the most helpful WSO content:

Top Finance Clubs at UVA for IB Recruiting

  1. Tier 1: McIntire Investment Institute (MII)

    • A student-run hedge fund with ~$500-600k AUM.
    • Known for its robust alumni network and structured pipelines to top firms, including elite boutiques like HL RX.
    • Highly competitive with an acceptance rate that progresses members from Analyst to Associate to Portfolio Manager roles.
    • Offers significant networking opportunities and resume drops for top firms.
  2. Tier 1: Alternative Investment Fund (AIF)

    • Also considered a top-tier club for IB recruiting.
  3. Tier 2: Akpsi Business Fraternity

    • A strong business fraternity that provides networking opportunities and resources for aspiring finance professionals.
  4. Tier 3: VVF (Virginia Venture Fund), GMG (Global Markets Group), SWS (Smart Woman Securities)

    • These clubs are solid options for building finance knowledge and demonstrating interest in the field.
  5. Tier 4: Other Finance Clubs

    • While these clubs may not have structured banking pipelines, they can still add value to your resume and help you build foundational finance skills.

Tips for Club Applications

  • Start Early: Many of these clubs have competitive application processes, so apply as soon as possible in your first year.
  • Demonstrate Interest: Highlight your passion for finance and investment banking in your applications and interviews.
  • Network: Build relationships with current members and alumni to gain insights and mentorship.

Courses to Take

  • Focus on courses that align with McIntire’s prerequisites and strengthen your quantitative and analytical skills. Examples include:
    • Introductory Economics (Micro and Macro)
    • Statistics
    • Accounting
    • Finance-related electives (if available)

Additional Advice

  • McIntire Admission: Admission to McIntire is competitive, so maintain a strong GPA and engage in extracurricular activities that demonstrate leadership and interest in business.
  • Networking: Leverage UVA’s proximity to NYC and the strong alumni presence in IB to build connections.
  • Greek Life: While not as significant as finance clubs, some fraternities/sororities have muted pipelines to certain banks.

By joining top-tier finance clubs, excelling academically, and networking strategically, you’ll position yourself well for both McIntire and a future career in IB. Good luck!
