Value of Varsity Rowing | Europe/London Recruiting
Freshman at European Target considering taking up position on school rowing team.
I enjoy the sport but like anything I need to weigh the opportunity cost. Training will take up a minimum of 7.5 hours per week in addition to race days.
My non-negotiables are a perfect GPA, strong club involvement and networking around recruitment season. 2nd year GMAT prep will also take place as Europe has a strong pre-experience masters culture.
Looking to gauge the upside of such a time commitment relative to what I could be doing instead. How much emphasis do London offices, specifically RX desks, put on rowing crew? I know it's big in the US and it hold's cultural weight at Oxbridge but does it really make such a difference and are there other areas to focus on that could yield a better return?
Joining the rowing team can be a strategic move, but its value depends on how it aligns with your broader goals and priorities. Here's a breakdown based on the most helpful WSO content:
1. Cultural Weight of Rowing in London/Europe
2. Opportunity Cost
3. RX Desk Preferences
4. Recommendation
Ultimately, rowing is a "nice-to-have" rather than a "must-have" for London RX recruiting. Focus on activities that directly align with your career goals and provide the highest return on your time investment.

8 hours a week is nothing compared to US college athletics / D1. If you love the sport, you can find the time to crush it and find a good job irrespective of "doing it for the resume"
Thinking it over 7 hours isn't a lot of time, it's fairly similar to a regular workout routine. Still need to factor in commute to training grounds morning and evening, additional weight training and team dinners. Appreciate the insight.
Bro you are overthinking this way too much man, just do it
