Vanderbilt vs other schools

Hi,

so I got off the waitlist for Vanderbilt as a transfer applicant. I also got into other schools such as Boston College but Vandy is the best school I got into. I am a current students at IU Kelley (yes another Kelley kid) and I have ok stats. I have a high 3.8 and think my shot at the IBW is fair. So my main question would be should I transfer to Vandy as its more prestigious and slight edge in ib/consulting recruiting or should i just stick to Kelley? Starting my social life over again seems daunting and something I don't look forward to. is it worth starting over again?

I think it might depend on what year you are. If you're a rising sophomore it's a lot more feasible to transfer to a new university and still come out with a great social experience. Disregarding social fit, Vanderbilt is a school in a much different league than Kelley (pure prestige wise) but in terms of banking it's not like you're going from U of Phoenix to Harvard. I would imagine that Vanderbilt (esp since you're not in the IBW yet) will set you up better for IB recruiting.

However, I wouldn't feel forced to transfer as you may really enjoy the scene at Kelley and if you really put the rubber to the road you can make IU work for you.

Hmmm if you were in the IBW and had good connections/set-up Kelley might have better ops - but that sounds like a big if right now (and granted maybe the kelley posters have somehow led me to believe that recruiting is better at IU than it actually is).

Vanderbilt >>>>>>> Kelley (no IBW). With the IBW, I'd say for exits Kelley >(slight) Vandy.

You are a soph so I wouldn't feel too stressed about starting over socially, and it may be worth it given other posters talking about how IBW is far from guaranteed. A  bird in the hand is worth two in the field as they say so I might lean towards Vandy.

IBW > Boston College >= Vanderbilt > Kelley for New York

IBW > Vanderbilt >= Boston College = Kelley for Chicago and SF

Ease of recruiting-wise, and from a student's perspective of course.

If these schools allow for rising juniors to transfer in then I would recruit for the IBW. If not just go Vanderbilt because IBW is far from guaranteed unless you have an internship, leaderships, and a 4.0 right now.

Yes but again unless you have an internship right now, multiple leadership positions, and then some... I've heard 3.9 thrown around as the average GPA, as well as there being fraternity nepotism.

You said you have a 3.8, and I don't know if that will get you past the 30% acceptance rate out of the 200+ kids that apply for the IBW, the IB seminar, the Capital Markets workshop, etc.

Idiot IU Kelley kids like you are the reason why people clown on the school. It’s nothing more than a semi target and the only reason why it’s not a non target is because white and Indian kids fake diversity

I don't know what the intern above is smoking but take Vanderbilt. Outside of Kelley kids at banks, no one knows what IBW is. I only know about it because IU kids jerk it off in this forum.

Your school stays with you for the rest of your life and Vanderbilt is a great name. My bank has a ton of Vanderbilt analysts and one IU person that I know of (who did a MBA and then banking).

Nobody except Kelley kids need to know what IBW is if you have alumni in banking bonded to a program that has a reputation of producing banking-ready kids compared to a liberal arts curriculum at Vanderbilt.

Check LinkedIn alumni and any placement stats such as on PeakFrameworks. Vanderbilt is as strong as Kelley's placement except the IBW is the equivalent of rushing a frat and being friends with the exec board. The reality is that the IBW guarantees a referral from a senior person, and therefore an interview, whereas Vanderbilt doesn't. That's what makes it easy.

There are IBW alumni in megafunds and Qatalyst. They're good enough on both the prestige side and the technical side. Check out how many Principals they have at KKR.

I went to Vandy but my biased opinion is below... Also one data point but I'm blown away (as someone who ironically almost went to IU) that IU would ever be considered a better school???

If you want a good all-around school with good brand name/solid placement/loyal alums, go to Vandy. Also Nashville >>>>>> Bloomington

If you want an average school with average brand name and average placement excluding a niche program that might place slightly better than Vandy (but I'd guess is marginally better at best), go to IU. IMO it might help you get that first job but nobody beyond that is going to respect the name. Vandy ain't an ivy but it's a good enough brand that you can get through any door you work hard at (speaking from experience)

But wont me going to a good bank after undergrad cancel out a mediocre school?

Maybe, assuming that's your goal. But I honestly think if you're gunning for PE or other more "elitist" finance roles, having a solid bank and vandy is better than having a marginally better bank and IU.

Obviously not true if we're comparing like GS/EVR to Wells Fargo.... but I doubt the difference in placement is that big between IU and Vandy. If you can make it to a top BB/EB from IU you will be able to do the same from Vandy. And after that you have a better brand name on your side.

Don’t act like there is a single bank that an IU IBW kid can land that a vandy kid will have a more difficult time with. I’d hate to break it to you, but most kids in the honorable IBW are not landing offers from top banks, a select few are. And the elitist asshats in PE still care about your school.

Vanderbilt is a far better school academically. Really no comparison. If you want to go to grad school, Vanderbilt smokes IU. Pretty sure they are also a much better option for consulting. Maybe IBW gives you an edge for banking recruiting but I can't see it being a night and day comparison. Assuming finances are not an issue, I would go to Vandy (or even BC).

I've now seen Vanderbilt vs. IU threads multiple times as well as BC vs. IU and even Cornell vs. IU. This is getting kind of crazy. Kelley is a solid business school and IBW is a nice program but Vanderbilt is a great school and your undergrad will stay with you forever (as someone mentioned above). Honestly don't underestimate the network you create just from making friends at all of these elite colleges. A lot of the students there are wealthy and super well connected and will be willing to help their friends out. I went to a lower tier Ivy and it was crazy seeing how well connected some of these kids were just through their prep school networks.

I go to IU and am a member of the workshop. I just want to say that f-210 (the class you need to take to apply) is expecting to have 700 kids for your year and the ibw will only gonna take around 70 kids.
