WFH Internship Confirmed - Which city to work?
So my office just confirmed a virtual summer internship. I'm a student living abroad that's going to be working down in the U.S this summer. They told us that we could work anywhere within the U.S (my actual office will be in the EST timezone, so that's a consideration). I've got no family/friends in the U.S currently so I'm open to moving anywhere in the country. What city/state would be best to live in during this virtual internship?
Preferences: None really. Just somewhere with nice weather, maybe in close proximity to other major hubs/states that I can visit, but overall just somewhere with nice weather and things to see/do. Really open to exploring
Miami
I'd recommend living somewhere in the EST with low COL. You didn't provide us with any preferences, but if you're into nightlife try a smaller city like philly / pittsburgh, or richmond are examples south of NYC. If you don't really know anyone in the US and intend to live / work there in the future, you need to make some. Hopefully by late summer more social things will be open (restaurants, bars, etc.) and people will feel more comfortable going so I'd recommend smaller cities like the ones I mentioned before.
Also curious, is your internship with a bank or ? Cause I'm really surprised to hear anywhere confirm fully virtual this early. Another thing you could do is reach out to other incoming summer interns and start up a convo and if you guys like each other then maybe suggest rooming together for the remote internship (personally think this would be fun and you could start making friends quickly). I don't recommend living alone during your remote internship (it'll be depressing and boring i think)
It's within TAS for a Big 4 firm, but that's a good idea! I definitely don't want to be spending a couple months in a different country alone.
Personally would go with a low COL city on EST. Charlotte & Atlanta come to mind
Without knowing what your preferences are, why not go to a place that is great in the summer (Atlanta in the summer? come on). Starting from the top: the cape, montauk, jersey shore, dewey beach, etc. I'd argue many places in the north are a lot more fun in the summer than Florida beach towns, and if you are just looking for a studio/one bdrm apartment, you could find something reasonable.
Charlotte or Atlanta would be fun affordable option
Wb Houston? I know it's CST but one hour different shouldn't be too bad
I personally, like my name suggests, like Houston. If the 1 hour loss isn't an issue for you, then Houston is nice.
You could opt for a low COL city like ATL or charlotte as others have suggested. But you may have a better time in NYC or Miami. And honestly as a diehard NYC resident for the past five years, this may not be the time to experience the city unless you get a killer deal on your housing given how gutted the bars/clubs/restaurants are. It would be great if you were here and could support the local spots but from your POV, may make sense to save money and just be in a low COL east coast city as the above mentioned, especially given the circumstances.
Nashville or Charlotte
Charleston, Savannah, VA Beach/Norfolk, New Haven, Charlotte, Myrtle Beach, Daytona Beach, Jacksonville, Providence, Portland (Maine)
nice to see the RI shout out!
definitely recommend florida as there are no state income taxes and you’ll remain in the eastern time zone.
Any tips on where to stay (e.g in Miami) that could be affordable but still allow me to make some friends in this COVID environment
Tampa, super lax on restrictions and way cheaper than Miami.
