What is an ideal sophomore summer/How does internship progression work?
I’m a freshman at a semi-target (Canadian Target) pursuing a five-year dual degree, giving me an extra year for recruiting. I’m planning my internships to land a BB/EB IB role senior(4th year) summer, leading to a full-time for after my fifth year of school.
Plan:
- Freshman Summer: Unpaid Internship at an LMM boutique. Should I stick with this or pursue VC/PE instead? (I’ve already done a search fund)
- Sophomore Summer: Considering S&T for quantitative skills and market exposure. Does this align with IB recruiting Comparatively?
- Junior Summer: Maybe Equity Research, Private Credit, or MM IB (e.g., Jefferies, HL, RBC) to build IB skills.
- Senior Summer: BB/EB IB internship, followed by one more year of school before FT.
Questions:
- Is this progression realistic, or are there recruiting/logistical challenges I’m overlooking?
- Are S&T and Equity Research good complements for IB? Should I also consider roles like Corp Fin or Hedge Funds?
- Any advice on maximizing internships to prepare for senior-year BB/EB recruiting?
Also I am somewhat set on getting to an BB/EB Since I want to exit into corp dev/strategic finance and I've been told a lot of these position go to GS MS Evercore, etc.
(btw I’m particularly interested in S&T since I am completing a stem degree and the exposure to markets—it’s something I’ve wanted to try ever since equities got me into finance. Similarly, Equity Research appeals to my passion for science and research, and even the ethical aspect and the people I've spoken to in the career seem very smart. Would love to hear your thoughts and any guidance on how to optimize this path for an IB career.)
Based on the most helpful WSO content, your plan is well-structured and aligns with the typical progression for breaking into BB/EB IB. Here's a breakdown of your questions and advice to optimize your path:
1. Progression Realism and Challenges
Senior Summer (BB/EB IB): This is the ideal target for your senior summer. The extra year in your program gives you an edge, as you’ll have more experience than traditional candidates.
Challenges:
2. S&T and Equity Research as Complements to IB
3. Maximizing Internships for BB/EB Recruiting
Final Thoughts:
Your plan is ambitious but achievable with the right focus and preparation. If you’re set on BB/EB for the exit opportunities, prioritize roles that align closely with IB (e.g., boutique IB, MM IB, private credit) over less traditional paths like S&T or hedge funds. However, if you’re passionate about S&T or Equity Research, they can still work as long as you network effectively and position your experience strategically.
