business casual when you work is different than business casual for a networking event. I would not go in a without a jacket. On the other hand, doing a blazer + pants combo is preferable to suit / no tie as it's more casual.

I wouldn't do the suit without a tie thing, but you definitely need a jacket. I went to a bunch of these as a student and again as a banker, and you really stand out negatively if you show up in just slacks and a button-down shirt.
