Right mouse click while you are hovering over the tab. Surely that one click is quicker than the separate key strokes?
No. Go rename 100 tabs and tell me if clicking is easier than ctrl + pg dwn; Alt ohr
When did you ever need to rename 100 tabs? What about Ctrl + page down, then right mouse click for your 100 tabs? 3 key presses vs. 1 click? Not every shortcut is a shortcut (as my wife sometimes reminds me when I'm driving)
There's just no way that you can grab your mouse, move it down to the tabs area, right click on the correct tab, then move your mouse up to rename faster than I can press four keys (this might take 0.25 seconds).
Ironically, even after you right click on the tab, it's still faster to hit "R" (which is the keyboard shortcut for rename after a right click) than to move the mouse up to click on rename.

alt O H opens the command to edit the tab. ohh (hide tab), oht (change color), ohr (rename)

To rename 100 tabs, it's probably fastest just to put all your names in a column and then write a few lines in VBA to loop through and rename.
using the shortcut is faster if you have your hands on the keyboard, instead of moving off to the mouse all the time. yes i use excel A LOT. thanks for the thread
