When to express interest in lateral as a SA…

Incoming SA at a large balance sheet bank in corporate banking coverage. I want to be in IB (switched from big 4 path and lucked out getting offer very late this semester.

Plenty of posts on here about networking but no one gets into the actual mechanics. A few questions for anyone who's been through it:

1. On the calls with people in the product group, are you upfront about wanting to switch? Or do you keep it as a "learn about your group" but what if it comes up?

2. When's the right time to actually express interest? Mid-summer? End of summer? Only after you have a return offer? Too early and I'm worried it gets back to my coverage group and tanks the RO.

3. Who do you ultimately tell? A VP who seems to be in your corner? HR/recruiting?

Appreciate any input from people who've done it.
