When/How to Follow-Up after Networking Call

I'm seeking an IB internship for 2024, and I've started networking with several different banks and I have had several phone calls. I'm from a school that is aggressively non-target, so all the guides and information on here have been very helpful.

I've been searching for an answer to this question for a while but I can't find anything on here that specifically answers it... but when is the best time to follow up for a networking call I just had? What I've been doing is this: I'll end the phone call with the analyst/associate/etc., then about 15-30 minutes later I'll send an email or LinkedIn message that says something like this:

"Hey Name, thanks for taking the time to hop on the phone earlier today! I enjoyed learning about [what we talked about] and I look forward to staying in touch. Thanks again, [my name]"

Is this too soon to send a follow-up? Is it even necessary to send this? Thanks monkeys

My advice is to wait a little longer after a phone call - think 3-5 hours after. You want them to remember you throughout the day, not just immediately right after the call.

I would also rephrase your email to be something like this:

Hey XXX -

Thank you for taking the time to speak with me earlier today. It was great to connect about XYZ. If you don't mind I would greatly appreciate it if you could refer me to another analyst in the group to continue the conversation.

Thanks, XXX

The point is to continue the conversation with another analyst. If you just say "thank you" and that's it, then there is no reason for an analyst to respond.

I agree with the above for how to follow up after the call.

I personally think it is absolutely necessary to send a thank you note. There are many ways the banker could choose to spend the 20-30min of time spent talking with you (getting more work done, picking up lunch, working out, etc.), that you should send a thank you.

I generally would save connecting on Linkedin until a second phone conversation, but nothing wrong with connecting after the first chat.

In terms of following up after your initial phone call, you could reach out 1-3 months later by responding to your thank you note from the email chain and ask if they have time to catch up or if they have any new information about the timeline for the interview process, etc. This keeps you in their mind and gives you another opportunity to connect with them and learn more about the firm.
